Buzzards Bay 25' Class [Bagatelle, Mink, Tarantula, Vitessa, White Cap]

Description

Nathaniel G. Herreshoff designed the Buzzards Bay 25s, a one-design class of racing sloops, for the Beverly Yacht Club in 1914. Based on Herreshoff's own sloop, Alerion III, this class had relatively shorter overhangs, higher freeboard, a slightly hollow bow, and a centerboard for shallow-water sailing. Five Buzzards Bay 25s were built in 1914, and, despite a squall that sunk two during a race in 1915, four of them have had decades-long sailing careers.

Buzzards Bay 25s are sometimes known as the 550 sail area class, for the approximate square footage of the original sail plan, or the 733 class, for the original Herreshoff hull number.
