Description

A diorama showcasing a metal cylinder with a metal bar running through it. The bar is attached to a base meant to look like two pieces of coral with three shells attached. A larger scalloped shell is attached behind the cylinder, and a yellow submarine with the words “US Navy DSRV-1" painted on it is attached to the shell. The base has a small plaque that reads "DSS 18 IRIG Mod A".

The 18 Inertial Reference Integrating Gyroscope (IRIG) Mod.A gyroscope was developed by MIT/CSDL. Its development began in 1963 as part of a NASA-sponsored project for a Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) system. Draper would later use it for the US Navy’s deep-submergence rescue vehicles (DSRV).
