Beatty work with a machine designed to measure quantum yields of the production of hydrogen gas from water by light absorbed by certain ions. Original caption: "M.I.T. Physical Chemists. Mrs. Catherine M. Daley (seated), Ann Marie Johnson, J. Stuart Fordyce and James W. Beatty, Jr. (left) with apparatus employed to measure quantum yields of the production of hydrogen gas from water by light absorbed by cerous, ferrous and other ions. The work is part of the M.I.T. Solar Energy Conversion Project under the supervision of Professor Lawrence J. Heidt of the Dept. of Chem. who was Chairman and Responsible Officer of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council Symposium (Sept. 3-7) on the Photochemical Storage of Energy."
