Original Caption: "Nation's Highest Civilian Award, the Medal of Merit, was presented yesterday to the above New England scientists for their contributions to the World War II effort at New England Mutual Hall ceremonies. Seated, left to right are: Harold B. Richmond, Dr. Thomas K. Sherwood, Rear Adm. Morton L. Deyo, First Naval District Commandant, and Gen. Courtney H. Hodges, First Army Commander, who jointly awarded the medals; Dr. Edward L. Bowles and Hartley Rowe. Standing, Dr. Ivan Alexander Getting, Dr. Samuel H. Caldwell, Dr. Hoyt C. Hottel, Dr. Chester S.
