Original Caption: "38-J Tanya Atwater, M.I.T. assistant professor of marine geology, and Paul Johnson of Dalhousie University, on the Knorr, examine samples of rocks brought up by Alvin from a rift in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge two miles below. They were participating in FAMOUS, the French-American Mid-Ocean Undersea Study, in 1974 to learn more about the movement of the huge plates in the earth's crust."
