J. Harvey Evans (1914-1992) was a professor of naval architecture at MIT who specialized in ship structure, computer-aided design of marine vessels and the structure of undersea vehicles designed to operate at great depths. Born in Rochester, New York, Evans earned a bachelor's degree in engineering at Liverpool University in 1937. He then worked for 10 years at Bethlehem Steel's Fore River shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, one of the largest contributors to the U.S. naval shipbuilding program in World War 2. Evans joined the MIT faculty in 1947 and retired as full professor in 1961. He wrote many papers on general ship and structural design and received numerous professional awards and honors.
