Martin Buerger was a professor in the MIT Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and a pioneer in using x-ray photography to determine the structure of minerals. He invented dozens of instruments for use in x-ray crystallography, authored ten textbooks on the subject, and developed a camera that became the standard for photographing crystal structures for decades.
